08.19.05 Google
Tops In July Market Share By
David Utter
Not much surprise with the release of comScore's qSearch analysis for last month,
as Google and Yahoo top the list.
The comScore Media Metrix shows two-thirds of all search submissions going to
either Google or Yahoo sites in July. Google grabbed 36.5 percent while Yahoo
tagged along at 30 percent, according to a press release.
MSN/Microsoft sites stepped into third place, but had the greatest month volume
growth in search volume. It increased 30 percent from those done in July 2004,
and saw 744 million domestic searches. Total search volume for engines jumped
22 percent for the same period; that volume was over 4.8 billion queries.
Yahoo's Toolbar, recently enhanced with Y!Q technology, leads all toolbar searches
with a 51 percent share in July. Only 11 percent of searches started from a toolbar
in July, but the majority of those came from Yahoo's product.
AOL/Time Warner sites figured fourth in search, barely missing a 10 percent share
by a single decimal point. AOL has been aggressively repurposing itself as an
ad-driven portal, and search technology with its related advertising will figure
in that transformation. About the Author:
